Job Description

Performs back office duties to prepare patients for office visit, answers telephones, and processes daily referrals. Administers injections and oral medications. Assists with some procedures. Performs wide variety of patient care activities and accommodative services for assigned clinic patients as directed by Nursing Supervisor or Director.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Facilitates patient flow by preparing patient charts for providers. This will be done by placing vital signs and date on chart when necessary and checking to see if laboratory or x-rays were ordered at last visit and ensure that they are in the charts prior to the visit.
  • Takes vital signs, calculates BMI, and documents patient’s chief complaints and medical history. Documents and keeps accurate charting of patient care given as required by department and profession.
  • Prepare patients for examination and assists provider during examinations as directed.
  • Provides back-up teaching on after care instruction and health teaching, as assigned.
  • Prepares and obtains lab specimens to be transported to SYHC laboratory according to procedures.
  • Provides injections and administers oral medications.
  • Performs procedures such as assisting with suturing, inhalation treatments, EKG, visual and audiometric testing etc.
  • Provides coverage at all sites as needed.
  • Provides translation, verbal or written as necessary, if bilingual.
  • Performs and assists with the referrals process as needed.
  • Sterilizes instruments.
  • Performs follow-up on abnormal lab results as instructed.
  • Answers, screens and directs phone calls into department as needed.
  • Cleans exam rooms appropriately throughout various times of the day: start of the day, after each patient, before leaving for lunch, at the end of the day, and as needed.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety environmental and infection control standards.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs current literature, in-service meetings and workshops.
  • Checks inventory supply, stocks exam rooms, and orders supplies as directed.
  • Attends meetings as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested by Nursing Supervisor, or Director.

Job Requirements


  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required.


  • Medical Assistant Certificate
  •  CPR certification (Health Care Provider)
  • Current driver’s license and car insurance coverage required.


  • Completion of externship required by a Medical Assisting Program required.
  • 1 year experience as medical assistant in an outpatient setting and/or specialty area preferred.

Verbal and Written Skills to Perform the Job:

  • Bilingual (Spanish-English) required.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Technical Knowledge and Skills to Perform the Job:

  • Must have knowledge of medical terminology
  • ICD-9/CPT coding
  • Ability to type a minimum of 30 wpm.

Equipment Used:

  • Wheelchairs, EKG Machine, Gurney table, Vitals machines, Autoclave, Pulse Oximeter and other general office equipment.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Continuous standing/walking/twisting.
  • Occasionally lifts, pushes and/or transfers patients.
  • May be required to drive between clinics. Must be able to handle emergency or crisis.
  • Occasionally subject to multiple calls and inquiries. Exposed to unpleasant elements (Accidents, injuries and illness).
  • May be required to work evenings and/or weekends.
